Friedrich Nietzsche ist noch immer der umstrittenste Philosoph; die extrem gegensätzlichen Rezeptionsformen seiner Philosophie sind ein Spiegel des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Jahrtausendmetaphorik, auf die das Motto des zu seinem 100. Todestag veranstalteten Internationalen Kongresses orientierte, gab Gelegenheit, die Rezeption seines Werks kritisch zu analysieren, ihre Leistungen und Desiderate festzustellen und zugleich mit Nietzsche weiter zu denken, nach den philosophischen Implikationen seines Denkens für das neue Jahrhundert/Jahrtausend zu fragen.

"Fame," observes Elias Canetti, "wants to hang from the stars because they are so far removed . . ."1 What the seeker after fame finds attractive in the prospect of hanging from the stars are the conditions of distance and elevation, which promise security in the form of detachment and abstraction from the world below. We find in Canetti's image of the fame-seeking sensibility not two conflicting desires (for the renown conferred upon successful risk-takers and the safety (...) secured through abstention from risk) co-existing within the confines of an outsized temperament, but a single-minded need for safety from the threats of dissolution and oblivion. So imperative is this need that the fame seeker does not .. (shrink)

The attempt by Arnason and Roberts to interpret Canetti’s work in the context of social theory is taken here as the point of departure to investigate Canetti’s view on the phenomenon of resistance. Resistance is explored in the context of Canetti’s reflection on power and transformation. Further, it is argued that through his substantive concern for crowds, an epistemological challenge emerges for social theory. Canetti gives us some precious insights on phenomena of ambiguous multiplicity, which are (...) neither simple sums of separate individuals nor an ontologized Durkheimian collective. Not only this, he resolutely ventures towards the contingency at the foundation of social order, the ‘just-thisness' of power, revealing its non-symbolic basis in gestures that impart affects. It is at this level that resistance can be best understood as a movement of liberation from the grip of power. (shrink)

This article examines the link between death and politics in the work of Elias Canetti. We will study this relation starting from the search for the political problem of universality in Canetti, in orden to show how death appears in his texts as that that simultaneously habilitates and makes impossible the search for the universal. The unfolding of this aporia unveils, at the same time, the primacy of a certain bond between politics and temporality, insofar if politics (...) supposes the tie of humanity with the dead and the non-born, this link can only emerge from a time that is unhinged, from a beyond-of-the-living-present. Der Aufsatz vertieft bestehende feministische Lesarten von Canettis Blendung, indem er zentrale intertextuelle Bezüge offenlegt und den Roman in den Kontext jener Debatten stellt, die nach dem Ende des ersten Weltkriegs in Europa geführt worden sind. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich insbesondere mit der Rolle der Misogynie, die Canetti als vermeintliche Lösung der notorischen „Krise des Subjekts“ und festen Bestandteil der Hochkultur kritisiert. Das Augenmerk gilt nicht allein den weiblichen Figuren, sondern auch der narrativen Konstruktion des „Weiblichen“; umso schärfere Konturen (...) gewinnen dadurch Canettis Kritik und sein bitterböser Witz. Herkömmliche Lesarten wie diejenige Russell Bermans, der den Roman in den Dienst eines “charismatic modernism” zu stellen versucht, werden sich am Ende als revisionsbedürftig erweisen. (shrink)

Der Briefwechsel zwischen Lotte Tobisch, Mitglied des Wiener Burgtheaters, und Theodor W. Adorno begann im September 1962 und setzte sich bis zum Tod des Philosophen 1969 fort; er umfaßt etwa 280 Briefe, Ansichtskarten und Telegramme. Der Briefwechsel ist das Dokument einer Freundschaft über die Generationen, über die sozialen Positionen, die Formen der Intellektualität und die Temperamente hinweg. Lotte Tobisch von Labotýn, ein Vierteljahrhundert jünger als der Philosoph, hatte den sozialen Hintergrund, den er schätzte: >nicht bürgerlich, vielmehr adelig, nonkonform, mit der (...) Gesellschaft auf ironische Distanz vertraut. Durch ihren verstorbenen langjährigen Gefährten, den um fast 40 Jahre älteren Chefdramaturgen des Burgtheaters Erhard Buschbeck, Trakls Jugendfreund, war sie zugleich indirekte Zeitgenossin des Wien nach der Jahrhundertwende - jener heroischen Zeit der großen musikalischen Revolution durch Schönberg und seine Schule, der sich Adorno als Komponist und Philosoph verbunden fühlte. Lotte Tobisch, bekannt als Schauspielerin und durch ihre literaturkritischen Beiträge, war auch mit Günter Anders, Gershom Scholem, Fritz Hochwälder, Carl Zuckmayer, Ludwig von Ficker, Elias Canetti, Richard Neutra und anderen Größen des geistigen Lebens verbunden und befreundet. Sie erschloß für Adorno eine Beziehung nicht nur zum zeitgenössischen Wien, sondern zugleich, und emotional bedeutsamer, zum Wien seiner Jugend und seiner musikalischen Lehrzeit. (shrink)

Over a hundred scholars from as far away as Tokyo, New York, and Buenos Aires, participated in the twentieth congress of the Internationale Hegel-Gesellschaft held in Debrecen and Budapest, Hungary, from August 24 to August 28, 1994, on the theme: Vernunft in der Geschichte? Among those addressing the Debrecen portion of the congress were Agnes Heller, Manfred Riedel, Shlomo Avineri, Walter Jaeschke, and Ludwig Siep. Howard Kainz of Marquette University also gave a well received paper in Debrecen on (...) “Hegel’s Philosophy of History and Providence.”. (shrink)

This meeting of the Hegel-Gesellschaft featured forty-six papers, including those presented during the two plenary sessions, covering a wide range of topics within the theme of the congress. The congress was ably administered and hosted by Dr. Wolfgang Sünkel at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Nürnberg. As usual, the congress was heavily represented by scholars from Eastern Europe and by scholars working at the Hegel-Archiv in Bochum. The contingent from the United States included Howard Kainz, Thomas Rockmore, Lawrence Stepelevich (...) and myself. (shrink)

The Naturforschende Gesellschaft (NFG) of Jena, founded in 1793, became instrumental for the development of the sciences in Jena in this period. New experimental facilities, new organizational structures and new scientific topics such as antiphlogistic chemistry and galvanism were introduced into Jena via the NFG. An investigation of the letters that were sent to the NFG shows, 1., how important the NFG was for the reception of these new results and for transmitting them to a wider audience; 2., how (...) scientists, both in Germany and abroad, tried to establish a network for scientific communication via the NFG, and 3., how personal contacts between scientists and how various forms of written exchange interrelate in the activities of the NFG. The letters to the NFG, therefore, show how, in the period around 1800; smaller scientific organizations such as the NFG managed to form a focus for scientific research and scientific exchange, with these societies being particularly important for the reception of the, by the time, latest developments in science. The paper’s purpose consists in pointing out the importance of the notion of “territory”, in its different accepted meanings, for the development of a theory and a practice of subjectivity both in deleuzean and canettian thought. Even though they start from very different perspectives and epistemic levels, they indeed produce similar philosophical effects, which strengthen their “common” view and the model of subjectivity they try to shape. More precisely, the paper focuses on the deleuzean triad of territorialisation, deterritorialisation, reterritorialisation, with (...) regard to the role it plays in the forming of the subject and in connection with the fundamental deleuzean notion of difference; it furthermore concentrates on the characterization of the notion of territory in Canetti’s work, also in the light of the mentioned deleuzean categories and with reference to the crucial canettian concept of transformation. Finally, the paper analyses both the political consequences of the “nomadic subjectivity” Deleuze and Canetti deal with and the critical and problematic aspects it involves. (shrink)

The Deutsche Hegel-Gesellschaft, which preceded the Internationale Hegel-Gesellschaft, was founded at Nürnberg in 1953. The decision to work on an international scale and to express this also in the name of the society was made at the second congress in Frankfurt am Main in 1958. Wilhelm Raimund Beyer was the founder and chairman of the Hegel-Gesellschaft from the very beginning until 1982, when he was elected chairman of honor. The general line of the Internationale Hegel- (...) class='Hi'>Gesellschaft has all the time been to be open to all serious scientific work upon Hegel. The discussions of the meetings have not only always been broad and open but also controversial and to the point. Hegel has been studied historically and as a philosopher who is relevant to actual problems. That his relevancy is mediated with regard to essential points by Karl Marx has been a common opinion from the beginning. (shrink)
